All set up!
It’s been a long summer with so much to do. Everyone knows that moving is a lot of work and you forget until it’s you. We moved from Bellingham, WA to Portland, OR and arrived here so so much to find and set up. One of the big things was finding shop space. I knew already that I wanted a space in a coop or artists guild where I would have some companions. The last few years I’ve been working alone and I found that I’m not fond of it. I have been lonely that I knew I had to find a more social atmosphere. I signed on at Ideaworks in Auguest and have spent the last few weeks getting set up and moved in. I’ve just started building nightstands again a week ago. I had all summer off to think about ModernEthic and decided to make a few changes:
I’m just building nightstands for now. There are many reasons for this but specializing in one type of furniture is just much more efficient at this stage for me.
Planning on building on the nightstand platform. Making different doors, making units with drawers, making different lengths of feet all of this while still shipping in the same size boxes will work so well.
Doing all Linseed and wax finish instead of 0-VOC varnish. The rub in finish is more even and easier to apply well. I’m happier with the result. The cure time is longer but worth it. I feel the finished product is better than it’s ever been, but it does look slightly darker than the previous finish.
Trying to get a shipping partner to send my work. My current workspace doesn’t work well with UPS. If I could get a fulfillment partner I could periodically drop off goods and keep working.
So that’s it so far. I’m sorry to anyone who’s been waiting for a desk or chairs or console or record crates. For now I’m not building those and only doing nightstands. When I catch up to the demand for that product I may continue back into those others but for now I’m going to stick with what is working the best. Glad to be here in Portland, glad to be back up and working.
